The Magrahat College was established on 13.08.1996 at Magrahat, the Headquarter of Magrahat Panchayat Samiti, 24,South Parganas district, West Bengal, about 44 km. from Kolkata. It is a rural area mostly dominated by socially and economically weaker sections of the population including the minority community.

The College was aimed at providing opportunity for higher education in this backward area. Initially classes were held in the adjoining Anglo-Oriental Institution from 1996-99. Later classes were shifted to its own building in 1999.

The college is situated on a campus area of 4.04 acres of land donated by 10 persons of the locality. The building was constructed with major financial help from MPLAD fund, District Development Fund and Public donations.
The College is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and is recognized by UGC under Section 2(f) and 12(B) on 08.09.2004, i.e. eight years after its establishment. It is a grant-in-aid institution of the Government of West Bengal. At present, the College offers Degree in Arts both in General and Honours stream. Honours facility is available in Bengali, English, Education, History, Political Science and Geography. Science faculty is going to be launched in the next session. The College has its own building including classrooms, smart-classroom, library, office and multi-gym etc.
